How to install a roof vent
When it's time to install a roof vent , the process is relatively simple if you don't overthink it.
Roof vents are a must when installing or repairing a roof. The air in houses is filled with moisture and roof vents allow a place for that moisture to escape. This prevents rot, decay and mold and mildew buildup. After you've determined how many roof vents you'll be installing and where on the roof you'll be putting them, the next step is to get that thing installed.
Here's how to install a roof vent:
The tools needed are
- Hammer
- Screw gun
- 4″ hole saw
- Caulk gun
- Nail bar
- Utility Knife with hook blade
Mark your spot:
To begin, get in your attic and put a screw all the way through the roof so you know where you'll be putting the roof vent.
Remove the shingles:
Grab your crow bar and remove the shingles around the location you'll be installing the vent. Make sure to be extra careful in this step so you don't damage the surrounding shingles.
Drill your hole:
Center the drill bit around around the screw we put in during step one and drill through.
Place your vent:
Screw the base into the roof vent and lay the vent where you'll be installing it, then place it in the hole you've just drilled.
Cut shingles around the roof vent:
Use the shingles you cut before and mark around the roof vent so you know where you'll be cutting. Use a box cutter to cut the shingles around the marks.
Caulk the old nail holes:
Prevent moisture from getting into the roof by caulking the previous nails' holes. Now you're ready to nail your shingle back in.
Nail the base shingles in place:
Replace the shingles that the vent will be placed over and thoroughly caulk the nail holes to ensure a secure seal.
Place the vent base in place:
Place the base of your roof vent back in the hole and attach the top section using caulk to keep it in place.
Get the roof vent secured:
Nail the roof vent into the roof, making sure it's' completely secure to the roof. Once this step is completed, you're almost done. Now, you'll cut around the back of the roof vent and replace the last shingle.
Pro tip!
Use insulated piping to avoid moisture from building up. This is especially important in areas with harsh winters. This will further keep your roof from rotting and decay.
You're good to go!
Now the roof vent has been installed and secured, while voiding moisture buildup from new and old screw holes.
